Four Major “Ultra Flagships” Compete Head-to-Head: Which One Should You Choose?

If you’re looking for an Android flagship with the best camera performance and the most well-rounded overall experience, you can’t ignore these four models this year: Xiaomi 17 Ultra, vivo X300 Ultra, OPPO Find X9 Ultra, and Huawei Pura90 Pro Max.

Let’s start with a question many people are asking: why are all high-end smartphones so focused on camera performance now?

The answer is actually quite straightforward — performance, display, and battery life have already reached their peak across the board, leaving little room for noticeable differentiation. Camera systems have become the only area where brands can truly stand out and where users can easily perceive the differences.

Since everyone is competing so fiercely in imaging, among these four “Ultra flagships,” which one is the true imaging king? And which one offers the best value for money? Let’s break it down one by one.

1. Imaging Hardware: Bigger Sensors Do Matter — But It Depends Where They’re Used

Let’s start with the most important factor: the total sensor size. Many people assume that more cameras automatically mean a larger total sensor area, but that’s not true at all.

Based on actual calculations, the vivo X300 Ultra has the largest total sensor area, reaching 235.7mm². The secret lies in its ultra-wide camera — the Sony LYT-818, with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor, significantly bigger than the ultra-wide sensors on the other three models.

At first, I thought such a large ultra-wide sensor would deliver stunning results in daily use. But in reality, most people don’t use the ultra-wide camera nearly as often as the main camera or telephoto lens. This oversized sensor is better suited for landscapes, architecture, and vlogging, while for everyday users, the difference isn’t that noticeable.

Next, let’s look at OPPO Find X9 Ultra.

It has the most cameras among the four, but not the largest total sensor area. However, its strengths are highly focused: the telephoto system is the most powerful.

  • The main camera features an f/1.5 aperture — the largest among the four.
  • The mid-to-long telephoto uses a 1/1.28-inch large sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, also the highest spec in its class.
  • There’s also a 10x optical zoom periscope telephoto, making concerts and distant shots effortless.

Simply put: OPPO delivers no obvious weaknesses across all focal lengths, with telephoto performance pushed to the limit.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is a bit different.

In terms of pure hardware, it’s actually the most conservative of the four — its ultra-wide uses the Samsung JN5 sensor, which is relatively small and not quite what you’d expect from an Ultra device.

However, it has one unique highlight: 3.2x–4.3x continuous optical zoom.

At first, I thought this would be extremely useful. In real-world use, while the zoom transition feels smooth, the limited range means the improvement isn’t that noticeable in daily scenarios. Still, the direction is promising — if it evolves into something like 1x–5x continuous optical zoom, it could truly redefine the experience.

Finally, there’s the Huawei Pura90 Pro Max.

Based on current leaks, its setup is relatively conservative, essentially a mild upgrade over the previous generation.

  • 1-inch main camera
  • 1/1.28-inch telephoto
  • Large-sensor ultra-wide

There’s nothing particularly aggressive in terms of hardware, but it excels in stability and maturity, especially with Huawei’s XMAGE imaging algorithms.

In everyday shooting, it delivers consistent results — great color, solid dynamic range, and reliable night performance. It rarely goes wrong, though it may lack a bit of excitement or surprise.

2. Display, Battery Life, and Charging: The Keys to Everyday Experience

Instead of listing specs, let’s talk about real-world impressions:

Display

  • vivo X300 Ultra: 2K + 144Hz — the sharpest visuals and the smoothest scrolling experience.
  • OPPO Find X9 Ultra / Xiaomi 17 Ultra: 2K / 1.5K flat displays — more than sufficient for daily use, with excellent outdoor brightness.
  • Huawei Pura90 Pro Max: stands out for eye comfort and consistent color tuning, making it more comfortable for prolonged use.

Battery Life & Fast Charging (based on real-world tests as of April 9, 2026)

  • OPPO Find X9 Ultra: 7300mAh battery + 100W fast charging — the best battery life among the four.
  • Xiaomi 17 Ultra: 6800mAh + 90W — second-best battery life, with faster wireless charging.
  • vivo X300 Ultra: 6600mAh + 120W — the fastest charging, but with a slightly smaller battery.
  • Huawei Pura90 Pro Max: 7000mAh + 100W — well-balanced and stable.

Final Ranking (based on hardware, real-world experience, and price/storage):

OPPO Find X9 Ultra ≥ vivo X300 Ultra > Xiaomi 17 Ultra > Huawei Pura90 Pro Max
